ENGINE CODES

SAE J1939 PRE ALARM & ALARM CODES

The engine ECU broadcasts SPN.FMI codes along with a yellow or red lamp indication to communicate the engine is running outside of specification.  A yellow lamp indicates a pre alarm condition while a red lamp indicates an alarm condition upon which engine derate/shut down occurs.

SPN - Suspect Parameter Number

FMI - Failure Mode Identifier

Example:  An SPN of 110 indicates Engine Coolant Temperature is out of specification while the FMI of 03 indicates Engine Coolant Temperature is above normal.
